Iris Presents: Borgore at Believe Music Hall | Saturday, April 8th
Hailed as a “bass music sensation” (Complex), Borgore is synonymous with the type of no-fucks-given attitude and anything-goes behavior you’ll regret in the morning, but will never forget for the rest of your life. As one of the foremost figures leading today’s worldwide electronic music generation and one of the youngest pioneers in the global dubstep scene, Borgore, née Asaf Borger, is the sole architect of his self-produced “gorestep” sound: brash electronic rhythms, aggressive basslines, ear-worming melodies and nasty, irreverent lyrics that’ll awaken your dirtiest desires. Part sex icon, part rock star, and all-around EDM bad boy, Borgore is your parents’ worst nightmare, you sister’s sexual fantasy and your next musical idol.
Born and reared in Tel Aviv, Israel, and currently based in Los Angeles, Borgore has commanded the global dubstep and electronic music movement for the past decade. His expansive discography—two full-length studio albums, multiple EPs and mixtapes, countless singles and remixes and a handful of top-level collaborations with pop music’s elite, including Miley Cyrus, G-Eazy, Diplo and Gucci Mane, among others—reflects his ever-evolving, cross-genre sonic style, which encompasses everything from hip-hop and dubstep to bass music and even jazz. Collectively, Borgore today counts +181 million Spotify streams, +89M SoundCloud plays and +82M YouTube views.
His artistic scope as a self-made, classically trained creative multi-hyphenate has expanded since he first hit the scene at the end of the aughts. In addition to his multifaceted skills as a producer, DJ, songwriter, rapper and singer, he’s the founder and visionary behind his tastemaker independent label, Buygore Records. That’s on top of a busy touring schedule that takes him across the world’s top festival stages and sees him headlining his own sold-out solo tours year in and year out.
Borgore now flexes his artistic muscle in full-on beast mode on The Art of Gore, his new solo album and third full-length LP to date. Scheduled for release in2019 via Buygore, The Art of Gore sees the producer/artist revisiting his dubstep roots and arena-sized anthems with a reimagined creative approach for the current-day festival era.
The Art of Gore comprises a collection of songs, brand-new and recent, written across the past three years that explore a wide range of diverse genres—dubstep, deep house, hip-hop, trap, hardstyle and beyond—and feature an all-star roster of high-profile collaborators, including adult film icon Abella Danger.
Borgore debuted the first taste of The Art of Gore this past June with lead single “Summerlake,” a speaker-knocking dance floor weapon. Dripping in Borgore’s menace-meets-melody style, “Summerlake” is brutal and beautiful all at once: a bed of ethereal synths floats in ecstasy, only to be wrecked by a monstrous drop and bassline.
“I wanted to do something that’s cheerful and gloomy at the same time, bittersweet in a way,” Borgore says of “Summerlake.” “I always like when things contradict each other. The words are very cheerful—I’m flexing on the song—but the melody is melancholic. It’s dark and happy at the same time.”
On the seductive follow-up single “911,” Borgore reunites with adult film star Abella Danger. Featuring Danger’s sultry vocals atop a sexy deep house vibe and a bass-laden melody, “911” is a knockout punch fueled by hard-hitting dubstep drops. The track’s official music video, which stars Danger and fellow porn actress Gina Valentina, officially premiered on Pornhub, the world’s leading free porn site, in July. “911” marks the return of Borgore and Danger as a duo—following the producer’s wildly popular “Savages” music video, which starred Danger—and their first official track collaboration.
Elsewhere on The Art of Gore, Borgore enlists Estonian “rap sensation” (The Guardian) and conceptual artist Tommy Cash, who delivers his tripped-out vocals on the acid-washed “Forever in My Debt.” “That track talks about how I’ve personally helped a lot people who will forever be in my debt for all the things I’ve done for them,” Borgore says of the track, with a mischievous smirk on his face. After finding inspiration in Cash’s music following a “crazy night out in Tel Aviv,” Borgore reached out to the rising talent for an official collab. “Someone played his music and videos for me on a small TV, and I thought, ‘This is probably the greatest thing I’ve ever seen.’ I had to have Tommy on this track.”
The Art of Gore also includes standout tracks “Tetris,” a kinky, sexually provocative bass track, and the hip-hop-leaning trap cut “Petty,” which features Borgore’s raw lyrics and hypnotizing raps.
Collectively, The Art of Gore fully flaunts Borgore’s wide-spanning palette as a producer and artist, placing him in a creative lane all his own.
“The Art of Gore is full of songs for different moods—there’s no one mood or idea throughout the album,” Borgore says of his new project. “I want listeners to feel different in every song. It’s a 13-course meal, not just one dish, with a taste for everyone.”
The Art of Gore is the latest major project in Borgore’s still-growing career, which is rooted in his early days studying composition and classical music at the world-renowned Thelma Yellin music academy near his native Tel Aviv and drumming for Israeli deathcore band Shabira. He first broke out with the massive Ice Cream Mixtape (2009, self-released) and the two-part Borgore Ruined Dubstep EP (2010) series, the latter of which served as the inaugural release on his Buygore imprint and solidified him as an early frontrunner in the then-nascent dubstep sound.
Following a handful of popular singles and EPs, Borgore exploded into the mainstream with his breakout single “Decisions” (July 2012, Buygore) featuring pop starlet Miley Cyrus. In addition to launching Borgore’s widely spread ratchet-life mantra, “bitches love cake,” the track has garnered +29M streams on Spotify alone, with an additional +25M YouTube views for its messy, cake-tossing music video. He’s since collaborated with pop and hip-hop giants like G-Eazy on “Forbes” (+43M/Spotify, +26M/SoundCloud, +2M/YouTube); Juicy J on “Magic Trick” (+13M/Spotify, 3.5M/YouTube); and Waka Flocka Flame on “Wild Out” (+21M/Spotify, +3M/YouTube), among many others. Plus, he’s remixed everyone from Britney Spears and M.I.A. to Metallica and Cedric Gervais.
In 2014, Borgore unveiled a new side to his bass-heavy sound via #NEWGOREORDER (July 2014, Buygore/Dim Mak Records), his debut artist album. The LP, which features an epic intro from acclaimed actor and A Clockwork Orange star Malcolm McDowell, as well as a massive remix from EDM superstar Steve Aoki, debuted at #1 on the iTunes US Dance Charts, peaked at #3 on the Billboard Top Dance/Electronic Albums chart and charted on the Billboard 200 chart.
Ever the boundary-shattering artist, Borgore commands a kaleidoscopic sound that spans far beyond the dance floor. His 2018 EP, The Firest (Buygore), explores the producer’s passion for hip-hop via rap-heavy, trap-leaning tracks, including the massive “MOP” (+4M/Spotify), featuring Southern rap legend Gucci Mane and THIRTY RACK, aka EDM producer Carnage. Borgore broke genre boundaries once again with his instrumental jazz EP, Adventures In Time (May 2018), which perhaps serves as the first time an EDM artist crossed into the jazz realm and sees the producer expanding his style to new heights.
Outside of his own original music, Borgore is ushering in the next wave of electronic up-and-comers as the founder and head curator of his trendsetter Buygore imprint. Founded in 2010, Buygore is home to some of the fastest-rising newcomers dominating dance music today and serves as the incubator for the sounds of tomorrow. In addition to being one of the first labels to discover and release music from current electronic heavyweights like Dotcom, Ookay and Carnage, Buygore was at the forefront of the American bass house scene when the label signed and released Jauz’s massive anthem “Feel the Volume,” “one of the most recognized EDM tracks of recent years” (LA Weekly). In January 2015, Borgore and his Buygore squad released the collaborative The Buygore Album, which includes a collection of the label’s biggest and best artists, such as Ookay, Sikdope, Riggi & Piros and others, and features the breakout track “Lindsay Lohan,” alongside Jauz. In May 2017, Buygore launched Fresh Blood, a sublabel specializing in discovering and developing new, unsigned artists who are pushing the boundaries of electronic music.
Recognized as the Best Dubstep DJ by LA Weekly in 2018, Borgore remains one of the most in-demand performing artists in electronic music, with his larger-than-life personality serving as the ringmaster to the onstage booty-clapping and twerking contests. On the live front, he’s performed at virtually every global music festival, including high-profile sets at Coachella, Glastonbury, Lollapalooza, Ultra Music Festival, EDC Las Vegas, Tomorrowland and countless others. Additionally, Borgore hosted and curated his own Buygore stage at the 2016 edition of premiere NYC EDM festival Electric Zoo, where he welcomed Juicy J, GTA, Lil Dicky, Getter and others. He’s also headlined multiple international solo shows and worldwide tours, including the sold-out North American Blasphemy Tour in 2017. In 2018, he held down dual DJ residencies in Las Vegas at premier venues Hakkasan Nightclub and REHAB Beach Club. As well, Borgore hosts his annual A Very Buygore Christmas at Sound Nightclub in Los Angeles, an event series that helps local charities via toy donation and canned food drives and has welcomed past surprise guest artists including Skrillex and 12th Planet, among others. He also hosts his yearly Buygore takeovers and NSFW pool parties during Miami Music Week.
As he prepares to unleash his next bass onslaught via The Art of Gore, Borgore remains the cheeky provocateur everyone loves to hate and hates to love.
“The Art of Gore is me going back to what I’ve done in the past,” Borgore says of the new album. “My last two major projects—Adventures In Time and The Firest—were kind of out of my realm, but this album is me going back to my roots. Although, there are still some accents of new elements: I approached my old sound with new knowledge. I always bring a little bit of a true story to everything I do, so The Art of Gore is just like going to the psychiatrist: you revisit old nightmares and come out with new visions in your head.
